In the construction sector, safety measures at work are essential since construction workers use appropriate tools and utensils according to their work, exchanging them with each other and, in addition, they need spend much of the time close to each other.
For a long time there has been a fairly strict protocol with safety and hygiene measures that all construction companies must comply with, be it an international or a national construction company.
Some of the measures of this protocol are listed below and are of great importance because thanks to their compliance we can avoid accidents both to workers and to people outside the work.
Hygiene and safety measures in construction
The most important safety and hygiene measures at work are the following:
Construction Safety Measures
Training of workers
All workers must be aware of the risks they may face in their workplace and area of performance of their work. Therefore, they must be informed of the prevention and control measures that they must follow to guarantee their safety in their different jobs, through prior training and training for their job at the building.
To avoid risks such as that people outside the work access to it, it must be fenced, creating safe accesses only intended for the passage of workers to their work areas.
Therefore, all scaffolds, trenches and roofs must have safe access.
Signage of the work
Use of safety devices
It will be mandatory to include safety devices, such as protectors and sound signals, which must function correctly, since they are key to avoiding accidents. To fulfill this task, intelligent safety systems on site such as those designed by Cad.42 are necessary.
Rest areas and hygienic facilities
In any type of construction site, employees must have hygienic and rest facilities.
They should also serve to provide first aid and to locate fire extinguishing means such as fire extinguishers
Protective equipment PPES
Workers must have at their disposal all the necessary protective equipment to carry out each task, such as helmets, gloves, masks or special shoes appropriate to their functions within the work.
And, in addition, they must also have collective protection measures, such as safety nets, handrails, safety stops, gap coverage and all that are required depending on the characteristics of the work.
Other general hygiene measures
As we all know, due to the current COVID-19 pandemic situation, additional hygiene measures must be carried out.
Therefore, the construction company must apply the following measures:
Encourage individualized work
Whenever possible, it is best to favor individual work to avoid the risk of excessive contact between workers.
Although it is somewhat complicated in this sector, companies must make an effort to reduce infections.
Safety and health plan
The Health and Safety Plan will be delivered to all workers, in the training they will receive on the measures to be carried out due to COVID-19. In which information on security matters will be provided.
The construction company must have an area on site to provide soap, water and paper to dry their hands or, failing that, a hydroalcoholic gel.
If possible, you should also increase the number of toilets to avoid long journeys.
Frequent cleaning and disinfection
Disinfection, both of work materials and of shared use works or scaffolds, will be mandatory at least once a day or after each use, to guarantee the safety of everyone who participates in the work.
Isolation in certain cases
In the event that an employee lives or has been in contact with a positive for COVID-19 and presents symptoms, the company must proceed to its isolation and call the emergency services of its autonomous community.
Stepped access system
Whenever possible, it would be ideal to establish a stepped access system to the work, in which a calendar will be set where the names of the workers and their work quadrant will be put to avoid fewer crowds of employees possible and that each one has its recommended space.
If it is necessary to jointly inform the workers, either of the next task to be carried out, or to talk about the evolution, it will be done online, by telematic meetings to avoid the meetings of several people in the same space and guarantee the everyone’s safety.
From split shift to continuous shift
The continuous shift is recommended instead of the split shift to reduce the time workers spend on the job site and thus reduce the chances of contact.
You already know all the hygiene measures at work necessary in any company in the construction sector. Both in normal situations and in situations like the current one, of pandemic, the instructions of the Health and Safety Plan must be followed to guarantee the safety of the workers.
